Overnight Closures of South Elm Street, May 29 - June 2 Vehicles will be Detoured

South Elm Street Bridge Replacement Project Update

Reminder: Overnight Closures of South Elm Street,

May 29 - June 2

Vehicles will be Detoured

What's Happening

This is a reminder that crews will demolish the remaining portion of the current South Elm Street Bridge and install the new bridge over the weekend of May 30 - June 1.

The new steel bridge superstructure has been constructed on temporary supports adjacent to the existing bridge. After final details and structural components are completed over the next several weeks, a specially designed vehicle (called a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT)) will transport and install the new steel bridge superstructure onto its final location.

This approach is part of the project’s ongoing use of Accelerated Bridge Construction, which minimizes impacts to the public and shortens the duration of the project.

How will I be impacted?

To allow crews to prepare the roadways below the bridge and move it into its final location, South Elm Street will be closed beneath the bridge beginning at 8:00 PM on Thursday, May 29 and will remain closed through 6:00 AM on Monday, June 2.

The intersection of Laurel Avenue, South Elm Street, and Blossom Street will also be closed to through-traffic. Vehicles should follow posted detour signs or seek alternative routes. Please view the detour maps for more information.

The Comeau Bridge and Railroad Avenue will be closed for approximately four hours from 11:59 PM on Friday night, May 30 to 4:00 AM on Saturday morning, May 31. Police details will be in place to direct traffic.

About the Project

The current South Elm Street Bridge was built in 1906, does not meet current operational requirements, and is beyond its useful life. It is too narrow and requires speed restrictions which add to commuter travel times. The MBTA will use accelerated bridge construction techniques to reduce customer impacts. When construction is complete, Haverhill Line passengers will be provided with a safer, more resilient, and more reliable ride with fewer service disruptions related to the old bridge.

As a reminder, Haverhill Station is temporarily closed to MBTA commuter rail passengers through summer 2025. The closure allows for construction access and the replacement of the South Elm Street Bridge, which carries the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line over South Elm Street between Haverhill and Bradford
