Frequently Asked Questions about Marriage Licenses and Certificates

The City Clerk's office maintains vital records dating back to the late 1600s. If you are interested in genealogy research, please see the attached form.

Use this link to request a copy of your marriage certificate after marriage by mail.

How much does a copy of a marriage certificate cost?

Records are $10 per copy in person and $15 per copy via the mail. Records that are over 100 years old (1923 or older) are considered genealogical requests and the search fee ($10 per record in person/$15 per record via the mail) is non-refundable. If the record is located, the search cost does cover the cost of one record.

Persons wishing to obtain a license must be eighteen years old and file their intentions to marry with the City Clerk's office together in person (except for in cases where one person is in the military or incarcerated) at least three days before the ceremony. Blood tests are no longer necessary as of January 28, 2005.

In Haverhill, the cost of filing for a license is $40.00. The license is valid for 60 days, and may be used for a ceremony conducted in any Massachusetts city or town.  A valid ID is required to be presented  by both parties. The member of the clergy or Justice of the Peace who performs the ceremony must sign the license and return it to the city or town where the license was issued.

They are actually the same document. It is called a marriage license before the couple is married and a marriage certificate after the wedding has been performed.

The Clerk's Office will have marriage records of any couple who filed their marriage intentions in Haverhill. Certified copies of birth, death and marriage records are available at the City Clerk's Office in Haverhill City Hall and the state Registry of Vital Records and Statistics. Copies of vital records may be obtained in person or by mail.

Amended Records

In order for a record to be amended, you must contact the City/Town where the record originated. Marriage Certificates can only be amended in the city/town where the license was applied for (where marriage intention was filed).

The cost is $35 for an amendment. Please contact our office for more information regarding evidence required to make the amendment.

We take amendment requests in the order received and process them as soon as we receive the evidence. The average turn around ranges from one week to one month.
