Haverhill Trails Volunteers

The Haverhill Trails Committee (HTC) was created in 1993 as a result of a project - the creation of the Merrimack River Trail. The HTC continues to thrive today. The goal of the HTC is to create, maintain and enhance the City's hiking trails network, not only along the Merrimack River, but throughout the 36 square miles of woods, fields and shores of Haverhill.
Members of the HTC are all volunteers and Haverhill residency is not a requirement. The group also organizes many fun activities such as hikes, x-country skiing, social events and day trips. Trail work activities are scheduled throughout the year, and the work session usually lasts a few hours. Sometimes the HTC works with other groups, such as the Haverhill Lakes Alliance or Haverhill's Brightside.
Meetings are typically held the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00pm at the Tattersall Farm, 542 North Broadway.

Trail Stewards
Our Trail Stewards are critical to keeping our trails tidy and safe by alerting us to hazards, litter, and damage to our open spaces. Everyone can be a trail steward by respecting the rules of our open spaces and picking up litter as you go. But if you're looking to get more involved, use the sign-up form below to join us in keeping Haverhill's trails in top-notch condition.
Some core responsibilities of our Trail Stewards:
- Walk the trail periodically, preferably once in early spring and once in late summer or early fall.
- Identify turns and trail sections where blazing or signage is missing or could be improved.
- Remove any small trash along the trail. If there's anything larger than you can carry, leave us a message and our Trails Volunteers group can take care of the rest.
- Move any small limbs to the side or off trail that could impede safe walking, snowshoeing, XC skiing or biking.
- Report any trail maintenance issues, e.g.,
- Downed trees or tree limbs blocking the trail;
- Overgrown trail areas;
- Wet areas or other drainage issues impacting the trail or impeding safe walking;
- Large trash items;
- Evidence of illegal activity (e.g. garbage dumping, use of motorized vehicles, etc.).
- Report any trail kiosk issues.

Hike Leader
Another great way to get to help support our mission is to sign up to be a hike leader! If you have a favorite trail in Haverhill that you know like the back of your hand and may even have an inside scoop on the history and would be interested and sharing it with a small hiking group, please reach out!
Volunteer with Us!
Our volunteers provide invaluable time and effort for making Haverhill a better place. Our open spaces and trails greatly appreciate you!
