Statement:

The Council on Aging (COA) is the municipal agency that is mandated as the focal point for access to services and programs for the City's older adult residents (60 years old and older). Created under Chapter 495 of Massachusetts General Laws, Acts of 1956, and established by City Codes 4-2 in 1964, the CO A mission is to provide services designed to improve the quality of life for Haverhill residents who are 60 years of age or older.

We offer a variety of cost-effective programs and services for our adult residents that are designed to help them remain independent, stay healthy, keep fit and actively involved in their community. A Senior Identification Card (proof of age is required), available free of charge at the COA Info and Referral Office , is required in order to participate in many of these programs and services. We are supported by City appropriations, fund-raising, private donations and grants.

Director's Message:

On behalf of the Haverhill Council on Aging, I am pleased to provide you with this web page. Many of the older residents of the city and their families are not aware of the wide variety of services and programs which are available to them. This site should give you an idea of what is available and how to access these services and programs.

Included is a description of the various programs and services offered by your Council on Aging. I encourage you to read through various sections of this site. Finally, I want to publicly pay tribute to all those who make this work:

  • the Council on Aging staff
  • the Volunteers
  • our Council on Aging Board of Director

Without all of you, none of these programs and services would be possible. I hope you find this site useful. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to contact me.

Volunteers Needed! "Caring for others & being cared for by others has been shown to keep persons healthier." How can you find opportunities to care for others in meaningful ways? The COA would like to invite you to consider becoming a volunteer for our seniors. Whatever your age, you CAN make a difference in the life of a senior.

The COA is always in need of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to reach out to elders, teach classes, plan celebrations, make calls to reassure homebound seniors, and to become involved in numerous other ways at the Center. There are several tasks available so you're sure to find something you will enjoy. Enrich your life by getting involved. Come discuss your likes with our Volunteer Coordinator- let's get together!

Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed

Haverhill:

Just a few hours per week can make a difference in the lives of older adults in Haverhill. More than half of Meals on Wheels recipients live alone, and for many of them, the person delivering the meal is often the
only person they will see that day. The pandemic has been especially hard on seniors, many of whom were or continue to be isolated in their homes.

When you sign up to become a volunteer Meals on Wheels driver, you do more than drop off a meal. You make a difference. It's easy to give back. Drivers must be 18, pass a background check, have a vehicle, and a valid driver's license. Receive a daily stipend for a commitment from 1 to 5 days a week and
just 3 hours per day.

Ready to sign up? Contact Meals on Wheels at nutrition@agespan.org or call 978-686-1422
